A great two day hike/scramble along the spine of the Peel Range starting from Myttons Huts and walking up the track to the ridgeline. From here on its all off-track following a ground trail up the ridge to the north of Lake Peel and on upto Mt Peel itself. Navigating along the tops was simple with good visibility and a ground trail helped steer us in the right direction when we hit obstacles. We climbed over most of the peaks but sidled around Mt Ranolf and Prospect. A small tarn north of Spot Height 1525 probably has water all year round and might be a suitable campsite in calm conditions. There looked like there were plenty of campsites beside the lakes and tarns on north eastern slopes of the range from this point forward. We dropped off the tops just before Spot Height 1623 and followed the spur to the valley floor. There was a trap line leading off the spur from the bushline but it was going in the wrong direction for us to follow. The bush was reasonably open providing a quickish descent and from there onto Fenella hut. (17.6km, 9.75hrs, +2350m elevation gain). The next day I walked down the valley and walked into Sylvester hut to meet the rest of the team who had hiked along the Lockett Range and then it was back to the vehicle.....
I wouldn't recommend this route unless you have great navigation skills, excellent fitness, a head for heights and don't mind travelling over rough, untracked terrain with a few scrambles around rocky outcrops.!!
