Assisted on the Nelson Tramping Club's Snow Skills Training day held at the Rainbow Skifield on Sat Aug 5. With a great base and fresh powder on top, the conditions weren't ideal for the participants to come to grips with using an iceaxe and crampons. Practising self-arresting moved plenty of powder but with little purchase for the iceaxe pick, the slides were long and exhilarating. After lunch on a frozen lake we climbed up to the north-south running ridgeline and continued south to summit Mt McRae before some more bum sliding on our return to the carpark
