Alpine shrublands, tussock valleys and beech forests with pockets of podocarp are the predominant features of this backcountry park. The park offers rafting, canoeing, hunting and fishing, hot springs and tramping for both experienced trampers and day walkers. Picnic and camping spots are located at roadends.   • Jan 2010 - Private trip to Southern Kawekas,  Makahu Saddle, south to Mad Dog hut, Studholme Saddle Hut, Kaiarahi, Castle Camp, Kiwi Saddle Hut, Kiwi Mouth Hut, Back Ridge to Back Ridge Hut out via Makahu saddle.
  • ATC June 2006,  Makahu Saddle to Kaweka J to Whetu, Venison Tops, Mangaturutu Hut, down Makino River to Te Puia Lodge and out to  Mangatutu Hot springs
