A quick 2 day excursion to Nelson on a (fairly) good forecast to do the classic Mt Arthur and the Tablelands round in 2017. Loaded up with heavy packs to train for Denali, we flew in Friday evening heading up from Flora Car Park to camp on the slopes of Mt Arthur about 2hrs in. A beautiful evening and glorious sunrise made for a perfect camping spot. We headed up in great conditions where the wind dropped to give clear and still views from the 1795m Mt Arthur summit across the Tablelands and Kahurangi NP. Then we went a little off piste dropping down directly across some interesting limestone formations to pick up the track again over Gordon's Pyramid (1489m), finally dropping to our camp spot not far from Salisbury Hut alongside Sphinx Stream by which time the cloud had set in and occasional drizzle had started. Sunday slowly improved to sunshine around midday with a pleasant walk out along Flora Stream past several interesting rock shelters and the cute Gridiron Hut. Eventually passing Flora Hut we made it out mid afternoon for the journey back to Nelson and our flight home to Auckland. Good trip, great round. Highly recommended.
