Did a reccee up to Saddle Hill to check out the condition of the tracks and see what the view was like. Parked at the start of the Maungatapu Track below the caretakers house and walked up a forestery road to the Teal saddle, then climbing up to the trig at BDL3. The Zig Zag track from here to Spot Height 1168 was poorly maintained in places with lots of windthrow and the markers were at times difficult to see. Took me 2.75hrs to get to the top and approx another hour to get to Saddle Hill. The views from the top of a rock outcrop were mostly obscured by vegetation, not really worth the effort (see above). The track down the spur from SH 1168 to the Maungatapu saddle was well marked. Completed the 20km hike in 7hrs with no stops other than for pics. Google Earth's elevation profile had 1880m of height gain!....
