The Richmond Range, an irregular mountainous ridge with several rocky ‘island’ peaks rising above 1700 m, forms the backbone of the park, separating the north bank tributaries of the Wairau River from other river systems.

There are more than 436 kilometres of walking and tramping tracks in the park. The more popular longer walks include the Pelorus Track and for experienced trampers the Alpine Route. Short walks are available at most road-ends.
