  • Waitawheta Hut to Te Aroha township via Mt Te Aroha: 11.9km

A 31km trip requiring 2-3 days to complete incorporating the first part of the North-South Kaimai Track. You can start from Karangahake or a shorter route from the end of Franklin road. The track travels along the famous Waitawheta Tramway, allowing you to explore the Kaimai Forest Park's mining and milling history before climbing over Mt Te Aroha, the second highest point in the Waikato. Alternatively, rather than staying at the Waitewhata hut you could camp at the old Waitewhata hut site at GR471441. A toilet has been retained at the site and there is a large open grassed area for camping.
