Cycling the Tongariro River Trail
Over Anzac weekend we stayed at our Tramping Club Lodge up on Ruapehu which gave us the opportunity to do a few rides down that neck of the woods. On the Monday as we returned to Auckland we stopped off at the carpark beside the Tongariro river in Turangi and rode the Tongariro River Trail. Check out details here.
The opposite side of the river from the road (east side) offers a better ride without constantly negotiating barriers. The logical way is to travel south up the west side and return via the east as the climb up onto the bluffs opposite the carpark has a much better gradient from that end. A great family ride with very few climbs and a good surface for beginners..
