I had been looking for a lightweight pair of winter boots that had a Gore-Tex sock and were crampon compatible. I have had a number of pairs of Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid GTX boots, the last being a wide fit that was a far better fit for my wider hoofs. Whilst comfortable, the tread wore out reasonably quickly and the rand (the strip that covers the joint between the upper and the sole) quickly got badly scuffed. I have purchased pair of Inov-8 Roclite Pro G 400 GTX V2 boots.
I have now done half a dozen trips with the Inov-8s and I am very satisfied with there performance and comfort. A number of these trips have required the use of crampons and I found these boots were up to the task on lower angled slopes. They failed to provide confidence on steeper slopes but for general tramping use in winter they kept my feet dry and comfortable.
